Title: AFL - Richmond's 2014 Season
Post by: Dave on September 02, 2014, 10:32:39 am
If anyone's been wondering what I've been going on about in the chat box every weekend for the last few weeks, check out this video:

http://www.richmondfc.com.au/video/2014-09-01/road-to-the-finals

Before you do, a couple of things if you're not up on AFL foot. 22 players a side, 18 each on the field, 3 bench, 1 sub. Kick the ball through the big sticks, 6 pts, "goal". Between a big stick and a little stick, 1 pt. Kick the ball greater than 15 metres and player catches it, it's called a mark and they get time to take the next kick. Otherwise, play on and tackles allowed.

And background for the year: Last year was the first time in 12 seasons Richmond made the finals, doing it easy, but got eliminated first round. This year, they started awfully. At one point in the season, they were 3 wins 10 losses, which for all intents and purposes means you're out of the season. No side has EVER come back from a season like that. The odds were astronomical, and then... play the video.

Rugby is a rough enough game already... but Aussie rules is axes, swords, hammers and morningstars away from being all out medieval open field warfare.  And I didn't mention sheilds because anyone who has watched this - knows these guys would gang beat a mofo suggesting any kind of protective gear lol.

Seriously... who collects the dead when the game is over?  Or is it like Traditional Canadian Hockey - losers clear the playing surface?

That's where we get the term "Hoser(s)" because if/when your team lost a game, they actually had to re-flood the rink and smooth out the ice for the next people on it.

They beat swans...but didn't they rest tonnes of players? You'se got no chance in finals :P

No one gave them a shot of beating the Swans, even though they knew the team was missing one or two stars. Everyone wanted them to win, but every single media prediction was that Sydney would win comfortably. But for that first quarter they dominated the match, the Swans gruelled it back with their rugby gamestyle (which is disgusting, ruining the game), but the Tigers held them back. It didn't matter who was missing from Sydney, the players that would've had to cover them had an absolute blinder.

I was upset that he didn't play, actually, given that Alex Rance is a competitive beast. In the end, I don't think he would've made a difference. Rance played one of his finest games and not even Buddy would've looked likely against him. Hell, the only reason he got 4 goals in the game earlier in the year was when Rance was off him.

Legit though, this sport looks amazing. I'm gonna spend so much of my free time trying to catch games from now on I bet haha. That video and Mr Cotchin have already made me a Richmond fan so that's a start ;)

The AFL website has full game replays available, I think they work internationally. Try this:

Ahh it only works for Australia and New Zealand D: Thanks for the link though - I'm sure if I scour the internet I'll come across some replays somewhere :)

If you use Chrome you could try using the Hola extension to change your region for the AFL website. Or just watch highlight videos on youtube.

I still say that's one of the most brutal games on earth.  It's right up there with Lacrosse... which I'm pretty sure people only added a ball and two nets - so that it actually Looks like they're doing something besides smashing people with sticks.
